| WHO ARE YOU |

01.) What are your goals in life?

I'm still working on trying to figure that out. I'd like to eventually find a career that makes use of my skills (math, mostly) in a way that gives me opportunities to think, and isn't leading to any harmful ends. Whether that's research in an academic setting or in the business world or somewhere else entirely, I don't know.

02.) What do you care about most?

God? My faith is very important to me, even if I'm not good at articulating it--it's shaped my worldview to such an extent that I take it for granted sometimes.

03.) What is one thing you would change about the world today?

Ensuring the planet as we know it remains inhabitable by people as we know them, well into the future.

04.) Is there anything in your life that you regret?

Yes.

All right, that was a short answer. I guess the times when I've been too wrapped up in my own mind not to percieve how other people might be hurt by my words. I'm not good at imagining how other people will react to what I say.

05.) Describe your top positive characteristics.

I'm good at thinking abstractly and can usually reason through math or language puzzles. I don't think of myself as very malicious and am usually able to let people go about their business without making a fuss, I can keep my cool fairly often.

06.) Describe your top negative characteristics.

I'm fairly insensitive and often don't understand others' emotions. I can get standoffish when I misinterpret people, such as believing them to be out to make me feel guilty even if they claim that wasn't their intention. I also get easily anxious and overwhelmed when I feel swamped for time.

07.) Pick a favorite quote and explain what it means to you.

"It ain't over till it's over" -- Yogi Berra. To me this means you shouldn't jump to conclusions before something is completely proven. Don't give up in the face of overwhelming odds, but don't get complacent when you assume there's nothing wrong. (Also, to me it means that sports without a clock such as baseball are superior to sports where you can run out the clock, but I guess that's a bit beyond the scope of this... ;) )

08.) Who is your favorite Harry Potter character?

Luna, I admire her willingness to be unique and her mix of esoteric knowledge and faith. (I also appreciate her passion for sports commentary.)

09.) Least favorite?

Maybe Greyback? The sadism of seeking out a child to torment is particularly distasteful. (In general I take a rather simplistic view of "the Death Eaters as a whole are not my favorites.)

10.) Who would you have been friends with at Hogwarts?

Luna, if I could put up with the Quibbler without getting into fights about it...if not, probably Hermione then. Or perhaps Oliver if he had time for a lazy bum like me--I appreciate his love of sports (and sympathize with his stubbornness when it comes to priorities).

11.) What would you most enjoy about your time at Hogwarts?

After the initial shock of "magic chess sets! secret passageways! not getting lost in secret passageways!" wore off, maybe studying Arithmancy or something. Although I wouldn't sneak out all the time to look for secret staircases, on the chance I had some spare time to poke around I'd like that for the first few months.

12.) Describe each of the four houses as you see them:
Gryffindor:
Known for their bravery, especially in the sense of seeking problems out in order to solve them rather than leave them for someone else to handle (even when the latter would be more prudent).

Hufflepuff:
Unclear, they're portrayed both as hard workers and the leftovers from the other houses. Because they've been stereotyped as less competent I see them as people who don't mind being ignored at first glance--more tortoises than hares. Practical and down-to-earth.

Ravenclaw:
People who enjoy having their brain define them, to a certain extent independent of actual brainpower. Probably students who appreciate the academic life and don't mind following the rules to be recognized for their talent. But not always following the unwritten rules and not being afraid to defy convention when they want.

Slytherin:
Again, they have a mix of portrayals--I would guess a lot of purebloods who choose to follow their families for tradition's sakes, but also Slughorns who know how to manipulate others to get their way. Eventually to be found behind the scenes in the Ministry or other corridors of power.

13.) Which house do you feel the least affinity for?Probably Gryffindor: I can see aspects of cleverness, loyalty, and ambition in myself but little in the way of bravery. I can get easily cowed by tasks demanding physical strength or daring.
